I know. I’ve been really bad at updating this site, but I’m going to shoot to rectify that. Starting with this post. Let me show you something I’ve been working on at the beginning of the month.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you live in Richmond and watch the news you might recognize your local news crew! That’s because I was hired to work a two day event with NBC NEWS 12! One part of it was working at their booth alongside of the crew doing caricatures of the people as they came by. It was PACKED both days. Once it got going it did not quit both days! Which is nothing but good news from my perspective. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The other part was before the event I was also given the task to initially draw three of the news talent! However three ended up turning to eight plus one after the initial ones were very well received!! I will say though that this part of the project was a challenge, and not for the reason some might think.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It’s one thing when you’re drawing people live where it’s one shot and let the chips fall where they do. It’s another when you’re doing commission work with references and some more time to make things work. It’s a whole other thing drawing people that are on TV. And not because the client was hard to work with either, because she was probably hands down one of the absolute best I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. It’s that when doing this and looking at references of each one I ran into a rather unique problem. You’re going after likenesses of the subjects, but unlike in most situations the question you end up asking yourself is who are you trying to draw? The TV personality, the person themself, or both to some fashion. IMO it’s both, but to a certain degree. It’s about what the project is being used for. In this instance I needed to see both downtime and on camera references of each person, including video footage of them. But at the end of the day at least 5 of these were going to be presented on TV and with that in mind ultimately they needed to be recognizable to the viewers when they watch the spot live.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That said, there were a couple that I had to rework a couple in the process, one mainly because I feel like I saw him wrong and needed to rectify that situation immediately. Another was due to some personal preferences of the subject themselves. Which is totally understandable given that presentation is a big part of being on the air. But in the end it all worked out and alongside the festival work, this turned out to be one of the best jobs I’ve ever got to work! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here’s some sketches I’ve done at the event itself...</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u4vjTh8Hcag/Vic99HIqN_I/AAAAAAAAItY/D2PEeoKCxoI/s1600/15%2B-%2B1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u4vjTh8Hcag/Vic99HIqN_I/AAAAAAAAItY/D2PEeoKCxoI/s320/15%2B-%2B1" width="255" /></a></div>
Decided to draw myself as a zombie for the first time in about a couple years. Last time it was for a price sign, and the time before it was for myself. This time it's back to being for myself, except now there was actually specific stuff I wanted to do with it right off the bat. Play on opposing angles of the head and jaw, having my hanging torso in the background, getting this pulling action with the lower jaw and the wound itself working, playing with blood spatters more, and some other stuff as well. <br />
<br />
I might have managed to freak out a follower on instagram with this though...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AxoSFt9uKV8/UkHhXKmBAdI/AAAAAAAAA6Q/Lg8Vn6eTOHk/s1600/IMG_3036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AxoSFt9uKV8/UkHhXKmBAdI/AAAAAAAAA6Q/Lg8Vn6eTOHk/s320/IMG_3036.JPG" width="246" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For reference, this was one I did earlier</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8lvJFHEHleQ/VifLD6DsD3I/AAAAAAAAItk/q9mEUVT1sok/s1600/zombie%2Bralph.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8lvJFHEHleQ/VifLD6DsD3I/AAAAAAAAItk/q9mEUVT1sok/s320/zombie%2Bralph.jpg" width="288" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And the very first one I've done of myself. It's been 7 years since this one, and 2 since the last. Keep in mind, we still have the Dixon Markettes back then.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And this was from my third event with the Zombie Caricatures guys. Improving, and still learning new stuff each time. They will always prove to be a great challenge and a true test of what you really know versus what you THINK you know. I went with a bit of a different approach this time and I think the results are a lot better for it. I've also gotten quicker with them too.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And then this totally unexpected thing happens at work one day. Whoever did this has an extremely good eye for detail. Seeing your work immortalized on skin like this is always a great honor. This makes the second piece of artwork.</div>

Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-56360936122078695192015-01-09T22:26:00.001-08:002015-01-09T22:26:37.123-08:00Working Christmastown, and the trials and tribulations of portraits...So for a little bit of time during the month of December, I was given an opportunity to really tackle something that I've been meaning to get myself better at, live portraiture. Before I go any further, this is in no way a slam against live caricature in any way as its a tremendous skill to have and those who are actually good at it will reap tremendous rewards from it. However, I will say that at least for me, going back to the portrait "roots" is vital. It keeps me grounded in a sense and serves as a reminder of the importance of volumes and form. <br />
<br />
When I took over the shop for the little bit of time that I had, there was one major goal I kept in mind outside of the obvious making crazy money. I felt like I had to really dig deep into the portrait end of it and come out of there better than I left. So without further ado, these are the pictures that I cooked up from the lab. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UaCDCsjFyfM/VLC9JVc2AOI/AAAAAAAAF9A/z4SSh8FBhtU/s1600/IMG_0327.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UaCDCsjFyfM/VLC9JVc2AOI/AAAAAAAAF9A/z4SSh8FBhtU/s1600/IMG_0327.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
So one of the first frontal sales I had to do was this dog. Admittedly, I think it's easier to draw them this way than at the caricature stand. It's quicker over there, but it's more accurate over here. I can't remember what the owner told me about him, but in case you were wondering, he is missing an eye. This one wasn't bad at all considering that the photo was a bit challenging.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H_WOT1gjR44/VLC9JWIC8wI/AAAAAAAAF9I/tY5sPPEziAo/s1600/IMG_0332.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H_WOT1gjR44/VLC9JWIC8wI/AAAAAAAAF9I/tY5sPPEziAo/s1600/IMG_0332.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
These two sisters were live. This one also brought about an issue that I'm gonna have to make sure I don't walk into, with the one on the right her nose should've been a bit shorter. These get a little tricky to spot mainly because you don't really get the time to step back and compare, so that means the initial observations just have to be sharper than typical.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0M2cNrNwE_M/VLC9JWLezaI/AAAAAAAAF9E/2zfJSB9zLrw/s1600/IMG_0351.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0M2cNrNwE_M/VLC9JWLezaI/AAAAAAAAF9E/2zfJSB9zLrw/s1600/IMG_0351.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Eartha Kitt. This makes the third time I've drawn her, but the first where she's not Catwoman. She's the first one to enter the lab where I got the chance to experiment with the pastels some. I also picked a reference that challenge my ability to see the planes of the face. She took longer than I would've liked, but the lessons from this one only served to help me speed them up later.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gUIeGHLFs0o/VLC9KMBB8oI/AAAAAAAAF9Q/Ykg6ARrTbQ0/s1600/IMG_0354.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gUIeGHLFs0o/VLC9KMBB8oI/AAAAAAAAF9Q/Ykg6ARrTbQ0/s1600/IMG_0354.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Another frontal, this time of a young girl. Overall it works, but the biggest stumble I made with this one was not sticking to the original plan because a vital structure of her face got obscured while trying to tighten things up. All this means is just map certain things out a little bit more, especially in the initial block in. Aside from that, can't complain too much about it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ddfF_SskU3o/VLC9KEITYeI/AAAAAAAAF9Y/UwI-E5dCMyE/s1600/IMG_0383.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ddfF_SskU3o/VLC9KEITYeI/AAAAAAAAF9Y/UwI-E5dCMyE/s1600/IMG_0383.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Aubrey Hepburn. Stepping back made me realize the eyes were a little too large for comfort. Could be better, and a bit less outline too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DI6O1tcov0I/VLC9KZVppWI/AAAAAAAAF9k/x4RyiYsR2Ss/s1600/IMG_0384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DI6O1tcov0I/VLC9KZVppWI/AAAAAAAAF9k/x4RyiYsR2Ss/s1600/IMG_0384.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
This kid was another sale I had. The only strike I have against it was that I could've given the right side planes of his face some more shadow. Aside from that, I was really happy with the child's likeness. The major forms did hit where they needed to the most.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5BLqNEBT5vg/VLC9KuZL1-I/AAAAAAAAF9g/B-jbeqGAiBY/s1600/IMG_0392.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5BLqNEBT5vg/VLC9KuZL1-I/AAAAAAAAF9g/B-jbeqGAiBY/s1600/IMG_0392.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Benedict Cumberbatch. Did some experimentation with the shadowing, especially with the Creat-a-color umbra. Use it right, and it does wonders. Too much and we'll have a problem. This sketch was the first one of two that I managed to actually sell, and what was even crazier was that he didn't last a day in the shop. Matter of fact it might have only been 2 hours or so before someone HAD to have him. This might have been a bit of a turning point, as the sale let me know that I was on the right track.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hweXBzi9bEk/VLC9LQU8bLI/AAAAAAAAF9w/FFLzrrKDPuM/s1600/IMG_0393.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hweXBzi9bEk/VLC9LQU8bLI/AAAAAAAAF9w/FFLzrrKDPuM/s1600/IMG_0393.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Prince. I decided to draw him with the afro for personal reasons. Also another one that experimented with a downturned angle. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Am6-jXN0jk/VLC9LalhdAI/AAAAAAAAF94/EMYSlIubFJI/s1600/IMG_0397.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Am6-jXN0jk/VLC9LalhdAI/AAAAAAAAF94/EMYSlIubFJI/s1600/IMG_0397.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Victor Newman, AKA "The Moustache". With this one, it became apparent to me that as with most things like this, the beginning phase can tell you a lot about whether its going to work out or not. I could see him as early as the block in phase about two minutes in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3xBPB3CX3o/VLC9LsfE-GI/AAAAAAAAF90/W98ZYuBFKMo/s1600/IMG_0399.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3xBPB3CX3o/VLC9LsfE-GI/AAAAAAAAF90/W98ZYuBFKMo/s1600/IMG_0399.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Patrick Troughton, AKA Dr. Who no. 2, He's got a great face and expressions, and I saw it as a challenge to really understand how the light and shadow plays off of that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nYY3G34_6Vk/VLC9MHwbqvI/AAAAAAAAF-I/OYeFhRsyI0w/s1600/IMG_0401.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nYY3G34_6Vk/VLC9MHwbqvI/AAAAAAAAF-I/OYeFhRsyI0w/s1600/IMG_0401.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Han Solo. His was the first one that the speed started to pick on. The block in was done so fast it made me pause for a moment. This one also made me realize when it was truly time to start adding the highlights, and to not piddle around with the dark and mids so much as there's only so much information those two can give you by themselves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-utFs21QjvFY/VLC9MJYwvrI/AAAAAAAAF-M/zgs2PJM4R8c/s1600/IMG_0404.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-utFs21QjvFY/VLC9MJYwvrI/AAAAAAAAF-M/zgs2PJM4R8c/s1600/IMG_0404.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Leia. Same deal with Han, but the angle made me think a little extra time about a couple things. I was really starting to like and appreciate the real potential of how these things can really look.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pLkaGYR3-sc/VLC9MdHbXJI/AAAAAAAAF-Q/oYi7uZ6BThE/s1600/IMG_0406.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pLkaGYR3-sc/VLC9MdHbXJI/AAAAAAAAF-Q/oYi7uZ6BThE/s1600/IMG_0406.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Rhianna. There were a couple things I really wish I touched up a bit more now that I see it again but otherwise it does look like her in the important ways. This one did look better in real life though.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BwTOCYuiS8c/VLC9M1VTGCI/AAAAAAAAF-g/aOaF4U8Khto/s1600/IMG_0420.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BwTOCYuiS8c/VLC9M1VTGCI/AAAAAAAAF-g/aOaF4U8Khto/s1600/IMG_0420.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Another frontal sale, this time a older and younger sibling. This was actually the first multiple frontal I had to do, and aside from some post sketch quirks you notice after the fact it turned out pretty favorably. Still need to be certain to watch the values though, and especially be very aware of the center line with 3/4 view portraits. It's easy to forget it in the rush of things.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VY8CNDgbTXk/VLC9NF67zEI/AAAAAAAAF-o/ZJgDyqcRwBI/s1600/IMG_0426.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VY8CNDgbTXk/VLC9NF67zEI/AAAAAAAAF-o/ZJgDyqcRwBI/s1600/IMG_0426.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
RGIII. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PoAi0dICU08/VLC9NLO9rhI/AAAAAAAAF-s/88pwgBrnDC4/s1600/IMG_0429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PoAi0dICU08/VLC9NLO9rhI/AAAAAAAAF-s/88pwgBrnDC4/s1600/IMG_0429.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Spock. I wish I had a better photo refrence as they were all pretty difficult to work from.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Mot4n5LgmjM/VLC9Nu4J-8I/AAAAAAAAF-0/vNOjlncWNWk/s1600/IMG_0433.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Mot4n5LgmjM/VLC9Nu4J-8I/AAAAAAAAF-0/vNOjlncWNWk/s1600/IMG_0433.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
LeBron James. I remember questioning the likeness on this one quite a bit after I finished it but it seemed like everyone who saw it at the shop knew it was him without me saying a word. Then on top of that, he became the second one that I've sold. Hence, you see the wrapper around it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-34_bnFBERHc/VLC9OJTQWcI/AAAAAAAAF_A/yNFBTKBH9ic/s1600/IMG_0434.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-34_bnFBERHc/VLC9OJTQWcI/AAAAAAAAF_A/yNFBTKBH9ic/s1600/IMG_0434.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Eminem. I think he might have gotten JUST enough values to work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2C2R0yg7P0s/VLC9OGRSx7I/AAAAAAAAF_I/Fi2g3qdE7GA/s1600/IMG_0439.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2C2R0yg7P0s/VLC9OGRSx7I/AAAAAAAAF_I/Fi2g3qdE7GA/s1600/IMG_0439.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Me, matting a silhouette up and getting them ready for oval frames. This was probably the one thing that gave me any sort of issues doing portraits at the park, but with enough practice and cutting through paper I managed to finally figure out a solid strategy for them. This was actually my first framed silhouette sale ever.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Went for a different approach with the lines and overall coloring on this one. I At one point I was almost scared to color it, but I'm glad I finished it up anyway. It definitely looks different than the ones from last year, but it's cool in its own way.</div>

Last year when I did these, one of the things that stood out to me about them negatively was how long it took me to do them. They looked fine, but between the undersketching and every other little thing in between they took too long in the end. So this season, I've figured out a few ways to streamline things. The biggest one, is killing the undersketching. This has its benefits of taking out an entire step, but on the flip side, it makes certain decisions a bit more difficult to execute and control than it would normally. Nonetheless, I'm really shooting to get myself NOT to chicken out on certain things regardless and go after them anyway, which you will see will have varying degrees of success.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So last weekend, I was given one of what I feel was one of the biggest opportunities in time doing caricatures so far. A couple weeks back I got a message from Sean asking if I wanted to come down to the VA Beach Tattoo Festival this year and draw Zombie Caricatures with him and Nick. It was 7:45 in the morning when I first saw the message, but needless to say I went from half sleep to totally up in a matter of seconds. In the back of my mind, this was something that I always thought would be really cool to experience, but nothing that I didn't think I'd actually get the opportunity to do. So to get invited to do this was an offer that I couldn't refuse. I had to work some scheduling magic to pull this off, but needless to say it happened and for three days I traveled down to the VA Beach Convention center to have at it with who I consider some of the best at caricature and art in general.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will say that I've learned a ton of stuff this weekend, not just about drawing zombies, but I'd say it was a lesson on drawing itself. I learned a lot from watching, some great critiques, and just drawing different people. It's real cool to see where I started at the beginning of the weekend to where I ended up. There's still plenty of room for improvement with all of them, but overall the weekend was a huge success. It helped me get a better grasp on certain things that stumped me for a while, and it also made me realize the importance of line work. When you're working on stuff with the kind of detail this has, it's important to really prioritize how you handle your line quality, as it can make the difference between an unreadable drawing, and one that's great to look at. Watching them use lines in their work was awesome, especially since there's a lot of small nuances to what they do that you're not going to really notice unless you're there watching it happen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whenever I get another opportunity to do these, I will definitely make sure to push the boundaries even farther than I did this time around. In the meanwhile, here's the blood bath from the weekend, all 16 of the unlucky dead.</div>

No. 1 The first one I drew the whole weekend. Tried some new ink tricks here, but I can definitely see that I could've pushed some line weights a bit more. One thing I noticed that they did was go back over their lines if it wasn't enough the first time, and it's something that I definitely should've done more with this.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
No. 2. A little bit better than the first. Hair got a bit too stiff for my liking though. And like before, could've used some better lines in spots.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CRNzKbXvEu0/U_OMzdftnLI/AAAAAAAAEVo/nGxMiL8ETpg/s1600/IMG_0817.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CRNzKbXvEu0/U_OMzdftnLI/AAAAAAAAEVo/nGxMiL8ETpg/s1600/IMG_0817.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MdABj6Z6KJk/U_OHbv_cCwI/AAAAAAAAEUA/zMvGhFEAEdE/s1600/IMG_0818.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MdABj6Z6KJk/U_OHbv_cCwI/AAAAAAAAEUA/zMvGhFEAEdE/s1600/IMG_0818.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
No.3 and 4. The first one I was really feeling. Also the first double zombie sketch too. So far it was all B/W drawings, but I feel like that was a good thing as it really made me work on my lines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5czYX3DZiqo/U_OM0ArGyUI/AAAAAAAAEWE/0aIPQVEBvqw/s1600/IMG_0819.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5czYX3DZiqo/U_OM0ArGyUI/AAAAAAAAEWE/0aIPQVEBvqw/s1600/IMG_0819.JPG" height="320" width="208" /></a></div>
No. 5 The undersketch had more life than the final drawing did. I betrayed it's flow a bit too much, and got lost with some crucial things.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZaKUOmYZHlc/U_OM0aaoZzI/AAAAAAAAEV0/9BxKH5VIn_k/s1600/IMG_0822.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZaKUOmYZHlc/U_OM0aaoZzI/AAAAAAAAEV0/9BxKH5VIn_k/s1600/IMG_0822.JPG" height="320" width="233" /></a></div>
No. 6 and 7. The first color sketch, and the first one to incorporate blood effects. It makes a world of difference and is totally worth the extra charge for it. I like the expression on the guy. And that side of his face looks really nasty.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RxPh-Gy0tN4/U_OM087OICI/AAAAAAAAEV8/Nsf8icoMvfU/s1600/IMG_0825.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RxPh-Gy0tN4/U_OM087OICI/AAAAAAAAEV8/Nsf8icoMvfU/s1600/IMG_0825.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LtaNAZlcUU4/U_OHdTJKa5I/AAAAAAAAEUY/I5p4NZ3tI34/s1600/IMG_0826.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LtaNAZlcUU4/U_OHdTJKa5I/AAAAAAAAEUY/I5p4NZ3tI34/s1600/IMG_0826.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
No. 8. Fairly simple, but pretty solid drawing though I wish I detailed the exposed skull on his chin a bit more than I did. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-34iMWlgZHwI/U_ONE83__HI/AAAAAAAAEWU/5y4n14YXvqg/s1600/IMG_0829.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-34iMWlgZHwI/U_ONE83__HI/AAAAAAAAEWU/5y4n14YXvqg/s1600/IMG_0829.JPG" height="320" width="262" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J8tI9yA4rDI/U_OHd1Orv6I/AAAAAAAAEUU/GmsmGesEwio/s1600/IMG_0827.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J8tI9yA4rDI/U_OHd1Orv6I/AAAAAAAAEUU/GmsmGesEwio/s1600/IMG_0827.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
No. 9. My favorite of the day. Stuck to the undersketch pretty well, didn't shy away from the angle I wanted, and the likeness was pretty damn good. People watching were really liking this one too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dDEc5acytsU/U_ONFJKYQhI/AAAAAAAAEWY/IZkuY4rzFg4/s1600/IMG_0833.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dDEc5acytsU/U_ONFJKYQhI/AAAAAAAAEWY/IZkuY4rzFg4/s1600/IMG_0833.JPG" height="320" width="242" /></a></div>
No. 10, 11, 12, and 13. Walked right into this one right off the bat. Actually got a little scared at the start from the idea of doing 4 on one, but I made it happen. The beauty of doing it this way is letting your exaggerations and/or ideas fit the people on the page as opposed to four boring circles. Creates a dynamic look for your work. Also liked how I didn't have to shy away from a kid's actual facial quirks on this one. Especially with the mouths and how the muscle makes it look underneath.<br />

No. 14. Tried another downward view. Pretty successful likeness, and a fun pose.<br />

No. 15 had a request. He didn't want a double chin. I can make that happen for you!<br />

No. 16, the last one of the convention, and the ONLY B/W one of the third day. He wanted something involving tattoing on his drawing, so I made sure to get it out of his head. Literally! Tried some new exaggeration challenges with this one, and it almost totally came out like I originally envisioned it.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
And the two of them side by side on the table as small prints.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The original park sketch that you see up there actually sold and is the only one that I don't have hanging up on the wall. Besides that fact though, it's also the main sketch of the entire group that was a definite candidate for a digital followup as I felt it was the weakest of the four Who sketches. <br />
<br />
Needless to say, much of the faces on both doctors were altered considerably. Especially Matt Smith's likeness, but a lot of William Hartnell was reworked as well. Also changed up some background elements, particularly with the lightning bolt, and the TARDIS flying in the distance. I felt like it told a more epic story that way.<br />
<br />
Technique wise, I went back to the older digital acrylic settings similar to the ones I used for the painting of Christie. I didn't allow for the gradients to be as smooth as that one though, as I needed their their faces to look a bit more chiseled and defined. I was thinking of making it more detailed, but started feeling like too much would take away from the whimsical feel that I felt like was really showing its head. 1000 wrinkles or no, you can still tell who it is.<br />
<br />
That said, I am considering another Who revisiting. But I think this one will be done with real canvas and paints. Stay tuned.Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-50301541828350565882013-11-07T11:24:00.001-08:002013-11-07T11:25:12.953-08:00Portrait of Apryl<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eQ2-WX1BAY0/UnveeKx5G9I/AAAAAAAABGU/ZWMAJ4l3wrw/s1600/IMG_3427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eQ2-WX1BAY0/UnveeKx5G9I/AAAAAAAABGU/ZWMAJ4l3wrw/s320/IMG_3427.JPG" width="254" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The final finished piece. 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was one of those things where I could've easily decided to do this digitally like many of the other ones and been done with it. The issue with that was that I've been looking at a lot of traditionally done paintings as of late, and while I have zero issue with digital and will continue to explore that option I felt like I needed to "return to nature" for a lack of a better term. I needed to feel that brush, the strokes on canvas, the experience of physically mixing your colors instead of relying on a color wheel or slider. More importantly, there was a question I needed to have answered. Could I survive without the undo command? The ability to lasso and move something if you don't feel it's correct? Could I work without the comfort of that safety net? And could I still get the kind of results that I wanted knowing that certain things that could happen easily with digital wouldn't come as easy on a real canvas? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, it was time to find out. Even if it didn't work out, I'm not gonna argue one bit about the subject matter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was done with acrylic paint on a 16 x 20 canvas. The reason for acrylic instead of oil is two fold. Oil would force me to work outside unless I want to die of the fumes from all the chemicals used in it, acrylic dries much quicker, and I've always felt at home with it back in college. Granted the trade-off here was that blending would be a bit more of a pain since it dries faster though that acrylic glazing liquid from back then offset that factor a bit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qWwSOs6LBTQ/UnvimX4YpwI/AAAAAAAABGg/1TqNs28SdT8/s1600/IMG_3324.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qWwSOs6LBTQ/UnvimX4YpwI/AAAAAAAABGg/1TqNs28SdT8/s320/IMG_3324.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the beginning I used just the primary colors and white to create every base color that I wanted to use. Granted, whether traditional or digital, I think this phase can be one of the scariest times of the whole project. You can see what it is that you want it to look like in your mind, but you often have to remember that things constantly change. This one was no exception. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wkk16ynVJNs/UnvjlL9GF9I/AAAAAAAABGo/CyXE2mXicRU/s1600/IMG_3415.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wkk16ynVJNs/UnvjlL9GF9I/AAAAAAAABGo/CyXE2mXicRU/s320/IMG_3415.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A second pass, a good deal later on down the road. Still working out a lot of stuff, but the figure is getting more refined at this point and the beginnings of water is starting to take shape. Background is still very basic though. When I worked on this I moved around the figure a lot. Don't stay in one place for too long, or you'll find yourself missing the big picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tC8YPxjxLY0/UnvkVrlhIAI/AAAAAAAABGw/f5lcyvEGEpI/s1600/IMG_3418.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tC8YPxjxLY0/UnvkVrlhIAI/AAAAAAAABGw/f5lcyvEGEpI/s320/IMG_3418.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Solidifying the color temperatures of the environment at this point, adding details in areas, and making corrections all around as I went. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I went for a full figured portrait on this one, as I really wanted to capture as much of the real person in the painting as I possibly could. A caricatured figure could've been interesting though and that'll be something I'll consider for a future project. That said, while the approach to the subject was pretty strict I did keep parts of it open to interpretation. After all, if someone wanted it to be 100% exact you can just get a photograph to do that. It's like my instructor George Pratt mentioned in my illustration class long ago, "Let a painting be a painting!" Couldn't think of a more appropriate approach.</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nqQqVybRIi8/UkHhVjcfxvI/AAAAAAAAA5g/WZ5FuCDD1Hg/s1600/IMG_2932.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nqQqVybRIi8/UkHhVjcfxvI/AAAAAAAAA5g/WZ5FuCDD1Hg/s320/IMG_2932.JPG" width="253" /></a></div>
The first one I did as a test for things. Getting a basic feel for things.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6BbBtX1_QqI/UkHhVWOIEqI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/BkLD3X6-6Bg/s1600/IMG_2936.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6BbBtX1_QqI/UkHhVWOIEqI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/BkLD3X6-6Bg/s320/IMG_2936.JPG" width="224" /></a></div>
Another one. Still working on it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4D0X-NcQig0/UkHhVkZ9zqI/AAAAAAAAA5c/puH5ygGVWnA/s1600/IMG_2960.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4D0X-NcQig0/UkHhVkZ9zqI/AAAAAAAAA5c/puH5ygGVWnA/s320/IMG_2960.JPG" width="261" /></a></div>
I like the look of it, but still a bit too complicated for my liking. That and it wasn't until the next one where I figured out why the blood was bugging me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SVEfoeGMDfU/UkHhWYqbZFI/AAAAAAAAA5k/oS9FUo38_Mk/s1600/IMG_2970.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SVEfoeGMDfU/UkHhWYqbZFI/AAAAAAAAA5k/oS9FUo38_Mk/s320/IMG_2970.JPG" width="231" /></a></div>
Redraw of a sketch from early last year. This time using a red marker for the blood. It's quicker and looks a LOT better.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lbyfV-Fd2Y8/UkHhXAUyAFI/AAAAAAAAA6E/SIbv7pR3Jk0/s1600/IMG_2981.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lbyfV-Fd2Y8/UkHhXAUyAFI/AAAAAAAAA6E/SIbv7pR3Jk0/s320/IMG_2981.JPG" width="246" /></a></div>
Starting to get there a bit more now. He needed to look a bit deader, and I also needed to watch my coloring as well. It's really easy for these to get too muddied up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjNafvTqrJE/UkHhW2vsKGI/AAAAAAAAA54/hiwKhWSLxzI/s1600/IMG_3035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjNafvTqrJE/UkHhW2vsKGI/AAAAAAAAA54/hiwKhWSLxzI/s320/IMG_3035.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Redraw of the first concept sketch. Much more like it this time. Definitely getting nastier.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AxoSFt9uKV8/UkHhXKmBAdI/AAAAAAAAA5s/5oicJQopCr8/s1600/IMG_3036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AxoSFt9uKV8/UkHhXKmBAdI/AAAAAAAAA5s/5oicJQopCr8/s320/IMG_3036.JPG" width="246" /></a></div>
The first zombie sketch I've done of myself in a while. If I didn't know any better, that looks like it should really hurt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9ME9j6Kb65Y/UkHhXkkhWLI/AAAAAAAAA58/aw2bplzgjp0/s1600/IMG_3060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9ME9j6Kb65Y/UkHhXkkhWLI/AAAAAAAAA58/aw2bplzgjp0/s320/IMG_3060.JPG" width="250" /></a></div>
The second real person done this way. Starting to incorporate brains now.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lfzXOk4meiI/UkHhYTS_zeI/AAAAAAAAA6M/M8IaIS6XB1s/s1600/IMG_3068.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lfzXOk4meiI/UkHhYTS_zeI/AAAAAAAAA6M/M8IaIS6XB1s/s320/IMG_3068.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
The second actual sale. The first one was done beforehand and I couldn't get around to taking a picture of it. Found some ways to simplify it for the sake of time, but it still looks pretty decent. They liked it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-clQdfFRu5Yg/UkHhYrXxdRI/AAAAAAAAA6c/tFDYaLCdYmg/s1600/IMG_3091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-clQdfFRu5Yg/UkHhYrXxdRI/AAAAAAAAA6c/tFDYaLCdYmg/s320/IMG_3091.JPG" width="229" /></a></div>
He wanted football incorporated into it somewhere. I incorporated it into his head. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2njVgOV8Xn8/UkHhY9aC1hI/AAAAAAAAA6Y/M2yidJdiF2k/s1600/IMG_3100.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2njVgOV8Xn8/UkHhY9aC1hI/AAAAAAAAA6Y/M2yidJdiF2k/s320/IMG_3100.JPG" width="252" /></a></div>
This one was the start of a bit of a different approach to it. I felt like this was when they started cooking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8EtqtjOLdQ8/UkHhZQKFU8I/AAAAAAAAA6s/39fu-3DUv9w/s1600/IMG_3101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8EtqtjOLdQ8/UkHhZQKFU8I/AAAAAAAAA6s/39fu-3DUv9w/s320/IMG_3101.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>
Tried some new things with this one too. That split head thing is the pits...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2UTRdSo0GEs/UkHha1ByMOI/AAAAAAAAA64/bjYdle8o4zk/s1600/IMG_3103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2UTRdSo0GEs/UkHha1ByMOI/AAAAAAAAA64/bjYdle8o4zk/s320/IMG_3103.JPG" width="229" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one was done at home for someone who saw my instagram posts and wanted one too. I used it as an excuse to try out things, and because of that it took two hours just about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZsG06xNu4g/UkHhZjutRWI/AAAAAAAAA6o/zJw4wA8h1pE/s1600/IMG_31334.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZsG06xNu4g/UkHhZjutRWI/AAAAAAAAA6o/zJw4wA8h1pE/s320/IMG_31334.jpg" width="243" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Still gruesome, but still recognizable. I'm seriously surprised that I got away with giving her the chin that I did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uChtWWq4YpU/UkHhbzpQeqI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/fnBWpkyrLGs/s1600/IMG_3165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uChtWWq4YpU/UkHhbzpQeqI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/fnBWpkyrLGs/s320/IMG_3165.JPG" width="255" /></a></div>
This one kinda got rushed to finish, so cuts (no pun intended) were made. Still worthwhile though.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hBRwPEI9tec/UkHhbGuUu-I/AAAAAAAAA7E/B_AZEyjTC-c/s1600/IMG_3163.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hBRwPEI9tec/UkHhbGuUu-I/AAAAAAAAA7E/B_AZEyjTC-c/s320/IMG_3163.JPG" width="246" /></a></div>
Enter, THE MOUSE. His face turned out really interesting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RtqfrWoZKDk/UkHhbCg9z1I/AAAAAAAAA7A/8XO2TT5DJg8/s1600/IMG_3164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RtqfrWoZKDk/UkHhbCg9z1I/AAAAAAAAA7A/8XO2TT5DJg8/s320/IMG_3164.JPG" width="260" /></a></div>
The dude's ok, but the chick... She turned out almost entirely how I envisioned it.<br />

This mom and daughter duo was very interesting. Was shooting for personalities more than the gross factor here, though I do like how what I planned out in my head mostly happened how it was supposed to. <br />
<br />
So if it's anything I've come to realize about these is that often times you can still get good results without even doing a lot to them. I've also found that due to the nature of these, there's things I seem to be able to get away with in terms of the head that I normally wouldn't be able to do on a regular park sketch which I find absolutely fantastic. What I've found is that just doing two to three different things tops will usually sell the idea just enough. Too much, and you'll run the risk of cluttering up the sketch like I did with some of the ones in the beginning. Clutter puts a hurting on likenesses, as you still need a certain amount of facial clarity in order to be able to see the person inside the sketch that's being maimed. <br />
<br />
Feel free to check back to this album, as more of them along with insights will be added as Howl O' Scream progresses.<br />

These two walked into DEADLINE one way, and came out minus their souls. The dead of Pompeii LIVES!<br />
<br />
Save for the first one, this new batch has one major difference. The use of foamies. It actually makes the coloring and shading quicker and easier, and it doesn't bunch up like crazy like it normally would either. Back in my second year in the park I used one for a little bit but didn't like the results of it at the time. While I probably wouldn't use it for the regular sketches in the park just because of the nature of them, it will be used for every zombie at this point, and quite possibly every commission I do. It gives everything a finished look that doesn't require as much effort and allows me to have more coloring options for shading too since colors like indigo blue won't initially go on as strong anymore. There is another one that I'm working on for someone, but I won't post it until it's totally done. I will say that the foamie went a long way toward getting the results that I got from it.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2f7x84nNOqU/Uhb8TZA1tHI/AAAAAAAAA5I/GuR2ZWp_cfs/s1600/1003944_10201314313932869_80725504_n.jpe" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2f7x84nNOqU/Uhb8TZA1tHI/AAAAAAAAA5I/GuR2ZWp_cfs/s320/1003944_10201314313932869_80725504_n.jpe" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, out of the blue I got another crack at frontals in the park. This
time I tried to get it closer to the newer technique that's being used
for them. If there's anything I like about this method, is that it does
look pretty damn good once you get it down to a good degree. It's got a
much more painterly look to it that you wouldn't normally get without
building up the values this way. I still gotta get the time down on
these, and there's a few things I still need to experiment with and
improve upon but I like the direction these are starting to head into. I do need to watch the size of the heads past the eyes though. It's really easy to run yourself into caricatureville if you're not careful. It might be as simple as doing a loose sketch of the overall shape and then adding the block-in for the eyes so as to use that as a potential measuring point.Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-57585570688195165302013-08-11T20:30:00.001-07:002013-08-11T20:30:10.902-07:00The late Freddy Mercury<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Still playing around with the figure and gesture a bit, and also playing with exaggeration a bit too. I think I'm beginning to realize that I prefer to exaggerate "within reason", meaning not too much, but just enough to where it's not confused for a portrait. I think it worked out pretty well. This was done with prismacolor art stix along with markers, a white gel pen, and a white acrylic marker.Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-15913579003645716102013-08-06T19:07:00.001-07:002013-08-08T08:13:26.013-07:00Batgrrrrrrrrrrrrl, Batgirl!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Just had to go with that title. That theme song is so corny it's great! I figured that I should work with a celebrity this time that involved a figure and gesture so I went with Yvonne Craig's Batgirl from the 60's Adam West Batman series. She was part of season 3 along with Eartha Kitt as Catwoman, matter of fact they both had their share of run-ins on the show. I found this one very fun to work on, and it also gave me an excuse to give that white acrylic marker a go on a more serious drawing. It made for some great effects on that suit, especially when gone over with different colors.<br />

THE CURRENT RULES as of 7-30-13 </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Movement is easy. Every $100 lets you move a space during the day until you get to a red battle square. At this point you are in battle, and accumulated net sales will only contribute to gaining experience until you match the level needed to beat the enemy. Each red space has it's own enemy, so you'll have to look at it's respective card to see what has to be done to beat it. Once an enemy is defeated you are allowed to start moving again the NEXT fiscal day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The ONLY exception to this rule is Derp the Dragon. Derp is a pushover on START, so I will allow you to move on the first day if your net sales is more than $400 as a level up is every $300. Ex. You make $500. You defeated Derp, but can only move 2 spaces ahead that day since the first $300 contributed to the experience needed to win the battle. For every other battle it is the standard rules.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
? Chance spaces. There are three of these on the board. If you land on this space you have to pull a random chance card to see what becomes of you on your quest. As of today, chance cards will NOT be out in the open for you to pick yourself, so you must get a hold of a manager or supervisor to be able to pull one. If an affliction on the card disables your movement for a day your avatar will have a red X drawn over it until the next fiscal day is over.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Beating all enemies through levels is one way to win. The other way to win is through assist cards. These can be acquired through various acts of valor that help us out at work during the day. When you're eligible for one, you get to pick a random card out of the bag which gives you a specific boost which you can use for one time only. The card must be returned to the box of the game master who gave it to you once it's used.</div>

THE NECROMANCER, AKA THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL IN THIS GAME.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the first ACTUAL game I've ever produced (not to mention the most ambitious one) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
as the last one was something I did on a TI-83 calculator back in high school. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There were a lot of challenges involved in the making of it. It had to be simple enough to where it was straightforward to understand and also easy enough to be able to produce. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Needless to say some ideas I had ended up on the cutting room floor, though ultimately I believe it was for the better. Originally, the actual board was going to have the scenery where all the enemies were located drawn out and interconnected with each other, but there were two reasons why I left it the way it is now. One, the enemy graphics would need to have totally transparent backgrounds and the time just wasn't there for that. Two, some things are just best left to the imagination. I kept the majority of the art and design in black and white as well</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
for the purpose of cost cutting, and as an excuse to use that brush in My Paint again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In a small sense, the game is still a work in progress. Here is a list of patches done and pending to the game. Current revision is ver. 1.3. Any changes made at this point will be from watching how </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
things unfold.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ver. 1 initial launch</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ver. 1.1 More chance cards added. Wyvern gained a tail in art. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ver. 1.2 Gwen, Maximo, and Rebecca avatars updated to be more accurate. One set of assist cards laminated. Update to the rules, you can move on your first day IF you make over $400. The first $300 goes toward the battle to beat Derp. What's remaining can be used to move forward. Ex. You make $500. $300 goes to beating Derp, so the remaining $200 allows you to move two spaces. This is the ONLY battle this will be allowed on since Derp is supposed to be a pushover. Also, if a Chance card</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
disables your movement for a day you will have a big red X marked over your avatar and will not be removed until that next day is over. After that, you can move on the next business day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ver. 1.3 A Quest Leaderboard is now up. You will be able to use a dry erase marker on its laminated surface. I do apologize for its delay as this should've been a day one thing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ver 2.0 pending: Support for Portraits and Body Art is being considered. If enough are interested I'll do it for those who actually wish to play it. For Portraits this may require a few changes to the enemies for it to work.</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_3A_ifMq1ls/UcHtMFOVeFI/AAAAAAAAAyk/DbrVDw-xXhw/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_3A_ifMq1ls/UcHtMFOVeFI/AAAAAAAAAyk/DbrVDw-xXhw/s320/001.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Not too shabby. I like the chick the most of the two.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pKmtpdsEtFM/UcHtMMHeVZI/AAAAAAAAAyo/rNaY5Jkjov8/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pKmtpdsEtFM/UcHtMMHeVZI/AAAAAAAAAyo/rNaY5Jkjov8/s320/002.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Demo portrait practice. Definitely some work to be done still, but it's getting there.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rhiX6db6DNw/UcHtMJWGZ9I/AAAAAAAAAys/27IWjKHqFwo/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rhiX6db6DNw/UcHtMJWGZ9I/AAAAAAAAAys/27IWjKHqFwo/s320/004.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Dr. Who no. 11, done in sepia tone. More of a test to see what I can do with it and see what I can work better on. I gotta start keeping in mind that these don't have to be as rushy as a theme park caricature.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g9MMWJc5Joo/UcHtMoo1N0I/AAAAAAAAAy8/j-MTglrjG10/s1600/005_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g9MMWJc5Joo/UcHtMoo1N0I/AAAAAAAAAy8/j-MTglrjG10/s320/005_edited.jpg" width="236" /></a></div>
Jermaine, done as a demonstration to one of my newest members of my caricature clan in an effort to show her how to deal with certain hair types. The fuzz above his lip is too dark though, it's the only real strike I have against the sketch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YPF7UVHva-Q/UcHtMohb21I/AAAAAAAAAzA/uo22ymKntHU/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YPF7UVHva-Q/UcHtMohb21I/AAAAAAAAAzA/uo22ymKntHU/s320/006.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
They wanted to be surfing with sharks. So in both cases they've got sharks propping their boards up. One is a bit more loving than the other though.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rrf92EfAQy4/UcHtMzE2Z3I/AAAAAAAAAzI/p7zcdAJotIk/s1600/008_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rrf92EfAQy4/UcHtMzE2Z3I/AAAAAAAAAzI/p7zcdAJotIk/s320/008_edited.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
Side profile that sold. Parents loved it, and while I didn't do as much with it as I would've liked due to keeping within the time restrictions, it's one of the better sold ones I've done. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SiXhh8dBndI/UcHtNUUF9_I/AAAAAAAAAzU/MuY_z2584PU/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SiXhh8dBndI/UcHtNUUF9_I/AAAAAAAAAzU/MuY_z2584PU/s320/010.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Ninja kid. Had a bit of a Samurai Warriors meets MAD with this one. Nobounaga doesn't seem to be all to pleased with how one boy wiped out his army. lol<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dz04ZwyMTGc/UcHtNiVCkFI/AAAAAAAAAzc/XSxbQm7fHJ8/s1600/011_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dz04ZwyMTGc/UcHtNiVCkFI/AAAAAAAAAzc/XSxbQm7fHJ8/s320/011_edited.jpg" width="242" /></a></div>
Older couple. Loved drawing this one for it's challenge. Also tried something a bit different with the people placement that I think worked out a bit better, though admittedly I feel this is easier to pull off with portraits.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tESuXP-9-FA/UcHtN5u4fWI/AAAAAAAAAzY/F6_JxUMhtZc/s1600/IMG_2142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tESuXP-9-FA/UcHtN5u4fWI/AAAAAAAAAzY/F6_JxUMhtZc/s320/IMG_2142.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
And finally, a portrait study I did from a sketch done by the absolutely amazing Candace Brown. I think I figured out quite a bit of stuff from this one.Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-38241125626166951122013-06-19T10:38:00.002-07:002013-07-11T12:55:47.770-07:00The Dr. Who Collection<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3IWRyZ4wTkw/UcHrX8C2Y_I/AAAAAAAAAyQ/igIfD8MK2L0/s1600/IMG_2296_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3IWRyZ4wTkw/UcHrX8C2Y_I/AAAAAAAAAyQ/igIfD8MK2L0/s320/IMG_2296_edited.jpg" width="258" /></a></div>
Dr. Who no. 1 and 11. (Matt Smith and William Hartnell) This one sold almost immediately after I finished it. I kept no.1 in black and white for the vintage effect. I could've colored him, as the photo reference I used of him was in color, but it's better this way.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DB_vIhzk_ao/UcHrX6C5f3I/AAAAAAAAAyM/wishljDAiik/s1600/IMG_2302_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DB_vIhzk_ao/UcHrX6C5f3I/AAAAAAAAAyM/wishljDAiik/s320/IMG_2302_edited.jpg" width="272" /></a></div>
<br />
Dr. Who no. 9 with assistant Rose Tyler. I caught a glimpse of the first episode with the living plastic and decided to do this based on that. Yes, I'm well aware that she's also rolls with Who no. 10 for a bit, but she originated with Christopher Ecclestion so that's how I chose to approach it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GWDunC1sNao/Uc2O4CLGT4I/AAAAAAAAA0k/68ig9y6ZITg/s1600/007_edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GWDunC1sNao/Uc2O4CLGT4I/AAAAAAAAA0k/68ig9y6ZITg/s320/007_edited.jpg" width="252" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dr. Who no. 10 with Martha Jones. Rose is part of 10 as well but I chose Martha instead as she originated in with this doctor in particular. I see why the modern series blew up with David Tenant. He's a riot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N8qGEE0hTT8/Ud8MEW2TY3I/AAAAAAAAA00/gSxwaryiXP0/s1600/Donna+Noble+cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N8qGEE0hTT8/Ud8MEW2TY3I/AAAAAAAAA00/gSxwaryiXP0/s320/Donna+Noble+cropped.jpg" width="235" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And last at this moment but not least Donna Noble feat. DALEKS! I had no intention whatsoever of doing this one, but a dear friend of mine requested that I draw her up too, so here you go. That and it gave me an excuse to draw Daleks since she was paired up with Who. 10 as well (he got around) and there's no other modern doctors to draw as of right now. Maybe a smaller scale piece of the others that haven't been drawn are in order. I got a feeling we're not done here. If I've come to realize anything about Donna, its that she's very structure dependant to get a solid likeness out of her. Of course I can see things that could be changed, but as long as it's done live and out in that park that'll always be the case.</div>

The one and only Shigeru Miyamoto. Definitely not the first time I've drawn him. Probably won't be the last<br />

Random couple. Liked the angles on this one, and her face was fun. Wish it was in color though.<br />

I literally FORCED this guy into the chair. Once again, I WISH THEY WANTED IT IN COLOR!!!<br />

Lady on the left is good, but I was really feeling the one on the right. Mothers Day present.<br />

One of the most fun sketches of the year so far. He wanted to ride a 4 wheeler (I guess it looks like one, LOL) and wanted her flying off of it! At one point this sketch drew a crowd of about 10 people.<br />

New family of three demo sketch up at Trappers. Decided to try some new dynamics with this one.<br />

And last, but NEVER least, Eartha Kitt Catwoman from the 60's Batman! Her and Lee Meriwether were MY Catwoman girls, even if Lee only starred in the movie and Eartha only did 3 episodes of season 3 with Batgirl. Shhhh.... I'm showing my age....Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-53349813409495672172013-04-10T09:39:00.001-07:002013-04-10T09:39:11.382-07:00And now, for random scribbles...One thing I've been doing with the Ipod lately at work with Sketchbook Mobile, is doing these random quick doodles of people. Many of these have taken no longer than 2 minutes, and the reason I've been doing these is to make an attempt to get myself to trust my initial judgments more without throwing them through a filter before it gets on a page. They're crude looking, and obviously some of them worked better than others but it's the act of exploration on it's own that makes it worth the minutes it takes to do these. It's been said that all the fancy technique and rendering in the world can't save a bad drawing with a weak foundation or statement, and it's very true. I've found that at times it's helped speed my park sketching up too, which is ALWAYS a good thing. It's actually nothing to get through about 12 or 15 of these on a break.<br />

A sketch of the parents. Was a bit rusty in the beginning that day but was starting to feel things again at this point.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3ZDr1dtRfEo/UWWQ_CwqfvI/AAAAAAAAAt8/t5aBfWsN0qg/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3ZDr1dtRfEo/UWWQ_CwqfvI/AAAAAAAAAt8/t5aBfWsN0qg/s320/003.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
And then there's the kids. Yes, the top one wanted to be drawn throwing up! Yes, you WILL get these kind of requests now and then. Prepare for them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zUC8JP6Hc7E/UWWQ_KpY5vI/AAAAAAAAAuA/IqQPZjtaGkY/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zUC8JP6Hc7E/UWWQ_KpY5vI/AAAAAAAAAuA/IqQPZjtaGkY/s320/009.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
Busch supervisor that I sniped at Festa. Cool with it for the most part, but there is stuff that I would definitely alter about it. Especially after seeing him up close.<br />

Incomplete Yoda in marker! Those chartpaks can go quite the distance if you give them a chance.<br />

Random demo sketch from a morning at Scotland. For the most part it hit the mark, albeit with subtle errors. Then again, it's also a 4 minute sketch.<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g7A2NBzH0Zk/UWWL52dcB1I/AAAAAAAAAsw/CldHN48O_cc/s1600/041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="112" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g7A2NBzH0Zk/UWWL52dcB1I/AAAAAAAAAsw/CldHN48O_cc/s320/041.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The banner for the night. I did the sketches and the logo for it, and the design was by Das Figurehead. Totally done at the last minute, but you know what? It couldn't have come out better looking. <br />
<br />
All of these are done with the standard marker, but I decided to do some basic shading with the black color stick. Granted, at work I wouldn't do this since it only takes up time that you could be using to draw the next customer, but when you're on your own it never hurts to take a couple steps into places that you usually don't get to explore too much. Who knows, you might learn something!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E_7O12D6r80/UWWMmijTSLI/AAAAAAAAAtg/_rxdaif1pLk/s1600/043.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E_7O12D6r80/UWWMmijTSLI/AAAAAAAAAtg/_rxdaif1pLk/s320/043.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
I kinda "sniped" him from a distance when things were a little slow in the beginning. Good practice from memory. I'd obviously change some things if I did it again, especially if he actually sat in the chair, but I thought the decisions I made were pretty fun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZU127u3EwVA/UWWL6d8RjwI/AAAAAAAAAtA/rjpSvgyW4fE/s1600/045.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZU127u3EwVA/UWWL6d8RjwI/AAAAAAAAAtA/rjpSvgyW4fE/s320/045.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Second's best likeness of the night IMO.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Cute, but fun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Took a new chance on that chin that I normally don't. This could be put to good use.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CyQfJtiuUns/UWWL7ZtNyPI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/UNnKwzBFd7g/s1600/048.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CyQfJtiuUns/UWWL7ZtNyPI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/UNnKwzBFd7g/s320/048.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
And with this one, I actually spent a little more time on, and changed up the approach a bit. I'm actually very pleased that the majority of the forms came out like they were supposed to.Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-78305711222133449102013-02-22T21:09:00.001-08:002013-02-22T21:09:13.326-08:00This week, in Caricaturama Showdown 3000!!! Jack White<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uUls0a0X6kw/UShLGm5gGfI/AAAAAAAAAsM/MK2EizbetAc/s1600/Jack+White+sketch.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uUls0a0X6kw/UShLGm5gGfI/AAAAAAAAAsM/MK2EizbetAc/s320/Jack+White+sketch.png" width="200" /></a></div>
This was an insanely fun sketch to work on. I really wanted to push bold values with this one along with shapes, and while I did have references to work from the picture itself is a result of 5 different ones. Well, 6 if you include myself "getting into character" in front of a mirror to get the mouth and cigarette portion as good as can be. I actually worked on this one while I was at the mall with my tablet. I love that thing, man I'm gonna be so broken up if for some reason it dies on me.Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-81264059668768296712013-02-06T21:08:00.001-08:002013-02-06T21:08:51.905-08:00Another piece of work with the tablet<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So My Paint so far is pretty damn good with quick sketch style caricatures. So what can it do with some other kinds of stuff? I decided to make it flex its muscles again and this is what I got from it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IWKMa0hDJMk/URM2FMacQBI/AAAAAAAAAro/a84wAuyPvv8/s1600/Angie+portrait+sketch.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IWKMa0hDJMk/URM2FMacQBI/AAAAAAAAAro/a84wAuyPvv8/s320/Angie+portrait+sketch.png" width="320" /></a></div>
The only issue, is that the output file isn't that high of a resolution. However, I do hear that there is a workaround for that, and if that's true that could change some things. As long as it doesn't impact performance too much it shouldn't be a problem for when I'm on the go.<br />
<br />
Aside from that, wow this thing actually does pretty damn decent pencils. I still need to mess with more of its brushes though, as I've used it's most generic option. Ralph Pollardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01482400338677510285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6854370496475201498.post-76965263426262395752013-02-06T21:01:00.001-08:002013-02-06T21:01:33.184-08:00DIGITAL CARICATURE TRIAL!!!First of all a shout out to my friend Chris Moore of www.visualunlimited.com for making this all possible in the first place! <br />
<br />
Long story short I've managed to acquire a tablet PC from him. It's a Gateway M275 series tablet PC. From what I understand, at the time of it's initial release this was a VERY expensive system. Primary reason more than likely being the fact that it uses a touchscreen that is operated by a stylus. But it's not just ANY old stylus. It's Wacom technology, and boy it lives up to the name. The kicker is that it supports pressure sensitivity, which is more than I can say for the iPad or many other tablets/devices not named the Samsung Galaxy Note (and even then it still doesn't work as well) The biggest issue I've always had with other devices was the lack of it, and while I could probably have gotten around that and been able to do stuff with it I felt like I would've been jumping through hoops just trying to get thick and thin lines out of the thing. So, what's the verdict of my tests? Well, I'll let the results speak for themselves...<br />

She was the first one to get color. I was pleased enough with it to take it a bit further.<br />

This was the first one to be done for someone in a live setting! It's a bit more simplistic for times sake, but you can get decent speed out of it if you set yourself up right. Still working on ways to streamline it though.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Can even work more than one in there!<br />
<br />
I think what I'm liking about this approach is the comic book like results I'm getting from these. The brush that I'm using in the My Paint program for this is Kagura for the black outline sketch and hair shading, Brush to block in the big color areas, Modelling 2 to work in highlights and shadow, and Charcoal to do stuff like 5 o'Clock shadows and such textures. My Paint is a pretty lightweight program so it works very well on this system given the specs and all.<br />
<br />
From what I've seen of it so far, I really like what I'm seeing from it. It doesn't seem to operate with too many issues, and it's definitely got promise in terms of where things can go with it. A few more trials will have to be done with it, but sooner or later I got a feeling that I'll have a new product to offer prospective clients. This might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.<br />
